Recent Case Study
A physically fit and athletic 28 year old male recently consulted me regarding pain he was experiencing around his shin. He played competitive hockey twice a week and often went running between matches to keep his fitness levels up.
This patient mentioned to me that a few weeks earlier he had been on a 6-mile run and since then, each time he ran he experienced leg pain.
On examination, his lower leg was very tender and inflamed. However after completing a thorough examination of his lower back, pelvis and knee mechanics, I noticed some restrictions through his lower back and pelvis. When I looked at his muscle recruitment I found that there was in imbalance in strength through his buttock muscles.
We have since been working through exercises and treatment together and he has started a slow return to running. However I believe that if we had not addressed the muscular imbalance I found during the course of my osteopathic examination then the shin splints would have re-occurred, even after lengthy rest. |
